Award-Winning Sheep Farming

Farming at Hill Top Farm

At Hill Top Farm, we are proud to care for a lively flock of over 400 breeding ewes, including North Country Mules, Suffolks and Texels. The lambing season kicks off in January, marking one of our busiest times of the year. During this period, we bring all the sheep into lambing sheds for indoor lambing.

This controlled environment allows us to carefully monitor the ewes, many of whom deliver multiple lambs, ensuring each receives adequate milk and care. Once the lambs are strong and the weather improves, we move them to the fields of our farm in Woodford. Here, they graze on lush grass, basking in the open space and fresh air.

Preparing for winter

To guarantee sufficient hay for the winter months, when grass growth slows, we leave some fields ungrazed in spring. This strategy allows the grass to grow tall, ready for harvesting into hay. The hay-making process requires meticulous preparation and hard work. When the weather is warm and dry, we cut the grass to produce high-quality hay. This hay is essential for our sheep’s diet during the winter, providing vital nutrients when fresh grass is in short supply. Our commitment to our sheep’s health and well-being ensures they flourish year-round, from the bustling lambing season to the chilly winter months.
